We all know there are some bad movers out there. Probably because like you, we've met some of them. You should choose your movers like you choose any other person doing an important service for you: with care and considerable thought. The people you hire will be temporarily in control of everything you own and it's crucial that you trust them.
The Indicators
Don't be fooled by fast talkers or false promises. What do “high-quality services” even mean? There's a good deal of moving company competition and you deserve to get the best. Taking a look at our Moving Squad testimonials is a good start but we've outlined some other key indicators that you have good moving service on your hands.
Inventory
Have your movers taken a survey of your belongings before the move? Before you move or any other arrangements are made, your moving company should ask to conduct an inventory of what needs to be moved. Your movers should know to ask you to sign an agreement if they've been around the block a few times. They will assess what you have and give you an estimate without any binding contract forcing you to use their moving services. Most moving companies will do this assessment as a complimentary service in hopes that you'll utilize their company.
If the inventory happens over the phone, be honest about what you're moving! You don't want to get stuck paying more because you thought it'd be okay if you didn't mention your 200-pound antique dresser or baby grand piano. Don't risk it.
Moving Estimates
Most reputable moving companies will provide you with three kinds of estimates. This is a pretty good sign that your movers are professionals. The types of estimates they should offer are a binding estimate, a non-binding estimate and a binding not-to-exceed estimate. If your moving company offers you these choices, you're in good shape. They're trying to present you with every kind of pricing option before you make your decision.
Rights and Responsibilities
You should receive a copy of this when you move! All moving companies are required by law to provide you with this document. The “Your Rights and Responsibilities” booklet is imperative in letting you know what the expectations are of both you and your mover. If your move is an interstate or local move, many times a non-reputable mover will neglect to give you this packet. Don't be fooled.
